Arthur Wells and Mark Burling recently bought Workhorse Recruitment and Workhorse Safety , a specialist recruitment and safety business in regional Queensland, through Business Brokers Queensland (BBQld). They were looking specifically for this type of business as Mark had worked as an employee at a similar company and had experience in the field. Mark found the business advertised for sale on the internet through Business Brokers Queensland and Arthur then contacted BBQld broker Corey Pollock for more details.
Arthur handled most of the discussions, initially with Corey and then
with the seller of the business. Having bought and sold businesses in
the past, Arthur was familiar with the process in general terms,
although he had only ever sold through a broker, not bought a business
through one.
After having done their homework on the business for sale, Arthur and
Mark decided that it was definitely what they were looking for. Arthur
takes up the story:
“Having sold a business through a broker before, I suppose like many
people I had a view of business brokers as a 'necessary evil'! Corey and BBQld were
in fact pretty helpful through the entire process - we got the
information we needed when we asked for it and, more importantly, Corey helped us considerably by keeping the vendor patient while we went
through a finance negotiation. This took a lot longer than we'd
anticipated, largely because some of the funding came via a Federal
program. All in all I'd say that BBQld were more involved in the process
than I'd experienced in the past, and I think that certainly helped us
seal the deal.”
Arthur's one piece of advice to prospective buyers of a business is:
consider what you're buying – is it value for money as opposed to
starting up the business from scratch yourself?
Arthur and Mark have been running the new business now for a few months and it's still early days, but both see a great future.
